    Physical activity and affect of the elderly: Contribution to the validation of the Positive and Negative Affect Shedule (PANAS) in the Portuguese population

    The concept of affect corresponds to the emotional dimension of subjective well-being (Diener, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin, 1985). It is represented by two dimensions (negative affect and positive affect), which were the basis of the development of the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule - PANAS (Watson, Clark, & Tellegen, 1988). It was translated and validated for the Portuguese population by Galinha and Pais-Ribeiro (2005b). Nevertheless, because the Portuguese version was not validated in a sample of Portuguese elderly, the goals of this study consisted in the translation of the scale (PANAS) from the original version of 20 items and the validation of its measurement model (including a shortened version) for a sample of Portuguese elderly (n = 311), aged 60 years or older (M = 68.53; DP = 6.69); it was then tested by a confirmatory factorial analysis. The results demonstrated that the measurement model (two factors and 10 items) of the shortened Portuguese version of the PANAS presented acceptable psychometric qualities, which adjusted to the data in a satisfactory way (factorial weights ranging between .57 and .70 in positive affect and between .52 and .68 in negative affect).     Towards End-to-end Speech-to-text Summarization

    Speech-to-text (S2T) summarization is a time-saving technique for filtering and keeping up with the broadcast news uploaded online on a daily basis. The rise of large language models from deep learning with impressive text generation capabilities has placed the research focus on summarization systems that produce paraphrased compact versions of the document content, also known as abstractive summaries. End-to-end (E2E) modelling of S2T abstractive summarization is a promising approach that offers the possibility of generating rich latent representations that leverage non-verbal and acoustic information, as opposed to the use of only linguistic information from automatically generated transcripts in cascade systems. However, the few literature on E2E modelling of this task fails on exploring different domains, namely broadcast news, which is challenging domain where large and diversified volumes of data are presented to the user every day. We model S2T summarization both with a cascade and an E2E system for a corpus of broadcast news in French. Our novel E2E model leverages external data by resorting to transfer learning from a pre-trained T2T summarizer. Experiments show that both our cascade and E2E abstractive summarizers are stronger than an extractive baseline.     Goal Content for the practice of physical activity and the impact on subjective well-being in older adults

    The main goal of this study consisted in an analysis of the impact that the goal content that leads to the practice of physical activity in the elderly population can play on the variables that constitute subjective well-being, as well as to analyze the differences in these variables’ levels according to the amount of physical activity practiced. A total of 300 individuals participated in this study (n=300), including 238 females and 62 males, aged between 60 and 90 years old (M = 68.59; DP = 6.54), who practice differing levels of physical activity. The results enable us to conclude that the goal content for the practice of physical activity has positive effects on the perception of satisfaction with life and on affect. To the same extent, they verify that health is the motivation that has the greatest weight on the practice of physical activity.     Reasons for dropout in swimmers, differences between gender and age and intentions to return to competition

    BACKGROUND: This study’s main purpose was to analyze reasons for dropout in competitive swimmers and differences between gender and age groups. The influence of dropout on swimmers intentions to return to competition, invariance across gender and validation of Questionnaire of Reasons for Attrition were also analyzed. METHODS: Study 1 – 366 athletes participated (N.=366; mean age 15.96, SD 5.99) and the data gathered was used for the exploratory analysis, and data gathered on 1008 athletes were used for the confirmatory analysis and the structural equations (N.=1008; mean age 16.26, SD 6.12); Study 2: 1008 athletes participated (N.=1008; mean age 16.26, SD 6.12) on the descriptive and inferential analysis of the reasons behind the practice dropout. The Questionnaire of Reasons Attrition was used in both studies to assess the reasons associated with the practice dropout. RESULTS: In study 1, the results showed an acceptable fit of the measurement model and invariance across gender and also predictive validity regarding swimmers intentions to return to competition (e.g., demands/pressure” negatively predict intentions). In study 2, the main results showed that the most significant reason for dropout in both genders and all age groups was “dissatisfaction/other priorities”; the study also showed there to be differences between gender and age groups (e.g., female and younger athletes valued “demands/ pressure “more). CONCLUSIONS: This study offers useful guidelines for the training process and to support decisions on sports politics to be implemented to overcome the dropout rate.     Entanglement Routing Based on Fidelity Curves for Quantum Photonics Channels

    The quantum internet promises to extend entanglement correlations from nearby neighbors to any two nodes in a network. How to efficiently distribute entanglement over large-scale networks is still an open problem that greatly depends on the technology considered. In this work, we consider quantum networks composed of photonic channels characterized by a trade-off between the entanglement generation rate and fidelity. For such networks we look at the two following problems: the one of finding the best path to connect any two given nodes in the network bipartite entanglement routing, and the problem of finding the best starting node in order to connect three nodes in the network multipartite entanglement routing. We consider two entanglement distribution models: one where entangled qubit are distributed one at a time, and a flow model where a large number of entangled qubits are distributed simultaneously. We propose the use of continuous fidelity curves (i.e., entanglement generation fidelity vs rate) as the main routing metric. Combined with multi-objective path-finding algorithms, the fidelity curves describing each link allow finding a set of paths that maximize both the end-to-end fidelity and the entanglement generation rate. For the models and networks considered, we prove that the algorithm always converges to the optimal solution, and we show through simulation that its execution time grows polynomial with the number of nodes in the network. Our implementation grows with the number of nodes with a power between 11 and 1.41.4 depending on the network. This work paves the way for the development of path-finding algorithms for networks with complex entanglement distribution protocols, in particular for other protocols that exhibit a trade-off between generation fidelity and rate, such as repeater-and-purify protocols

    A pilot study on fear and risk of fall: The impact of an8-month multicomponent exercise program in community-dwelling aged adults

    The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of an 8-month multicomponent exercise program in community-dwelling older adults. A comprehensive approach was employed to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of a thrice-weekly exercise intervention. Aged over 60 years, the capacity to stand and walk with or without assistive equipment, being physically inactive, medical clearance, and living in the community were all eligibility criteria. The Timed-up and Go test and Berg Balance Scale were used to examine risk of falling. The Fall-Efficacy Scale International was used to examine the fear of falling. The community-based exercise program involved thirty-five participants, the average age was 67.54 years (SD = 3.81) and 71% were female. At-tendance rates ranged from 76% to 100% on average. There was a significant trend toward a clinically important improvement in the timed-up and go test (t = 4.66; p < .001; d = 0.20), berg balance scale (t = -11.20; p < .001; d = 1.47) and fall-efficacy scale international (t = 5.81; p < .001; d = 0.88). This study has provided preliminary evidence that an 8-month community-based low-cost exercise program may be effective in improving agility, balance, and decreasing fear of falling in older people.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Este estudio tuvo como objetivo examinar el impacto del efecto de un programa de ejercicio de componentes múltiples de 8 meses en adultos mayores que viven en la comunidad. Utilizamos una estrategia inclusiva para examinar la viabilidad de un programa de ejercicio de tres veces por semana. Tener más de 60 años, la capacidad de pararse y caminar con o sin equipo de asistencia, ser físicamente inactivo, autorización médica y vivir en la comunidad fueron todos los criterios de elegibilidad. Se utilizaron la prueba Timed-up and Go y la Berg Balance Scale para examinar el riesgo de caídas. Se utilizó la Fall-Efficacy Scale International para examinar el miedo a las caídas. El programa de ejercicio basado en la comunidad involucró atreinta y cinco participantes, la edad promedio fue de 67.54 años (SD = 3.81) y el 71% eran mujeres. Las tasas de asistencia variaron de 76% a 100% en promedio.
